Island Life – my conservation story so far – Morgan Vaughan
Anyone who is gearing their career towards the conservation or environmental preservation sector will be fully aware from the off, it’s not an easy road. In this day and age where jobs in conservation are like gold dust and everybody wants to work outdoors, the stakes are high and the competition fierce.
Although this year was my 6th visit to Birdfair, it was my first Birdfair as an AFON member, so it was great to feel part of and represent a network of young people looking to protect our environment.
Last weekend I was at the Birdfair at Rutland Water, an annual event labelled ‘the birdwatchers Glastonbury’. I went to this event for one day last year and decided that I would make the most of it and go for all three days this year, camping on a nearby camp site. I was kindly invited to co-lead two invertebrate walks for the Wildlife Trusts, along with Dr Brian Eversham (@BrianE_Cambs). Aside for being CEO of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust, Brian is a great friend and an amazing naturalist. I have never co-led a walk before and was honoured to be given the chance to do so. It has been one of my aims for a while now but I have never felt knowledgeable or confident enough to do so.
Welcome to the overview of our Vision for Nature series. Over the last month and a half, AFON members have shared their own Visions for Nature: what they want the natural world to look like by 2050 and how they want to get there. We have created a hashtag on Twitter so why not join the conversation? What’s your #VisionforNature?
