We are currently recruiting for two A Focus On Nature committee roles – a Project Officer, and a Fundraising Officer and Treasurer. Read on for details!
Since its formation in 2011, A Focus on Nature has sought to encourage and bring together young people aged 16 to 30 who share a passion for the natural world. Through a combination of social media, events and mentorship, AFON has connected over 1000 young people across the United Kingdom and beyond, including aspiring conservation professionals, wildlife enthusiasts, writers, artists, photographers and poets. It has also spearheaded the Vision for Nature campaign and report, setting out young people’s vision for the natural world.
Projects and Events Officer
Deadline: 19th November 2017
Role Description:
AFON is now recruiting for the role of Projects and Events Officer. You will play a pivotal role in the committee and lead on the organisation of our national events programme, supported by other members of the committee. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills, increase your network and create an exciting events programme for AFON members.
Applicants must be below the age of 28 at the time of application. We ask for a date of birth to ensure this. We hope that the suitable applicant will take on the role for a period of no less than two years, and no more than three years. Please note that all roles are operated on a voluntary basis, with a small stipend available to cover expenses.
Duties & responsibilities:
Events management
- Working closely with AFON’s two other projects officers you will organise a flagship event for the organisation. You will be responsible for planning, organising, promoting and executing the event
- Lead the organisation of at least two events each year.
- Coming up with ideas for future events.
- Working with our social media and online manager to publicise events.
- Work with our Treasurer to prepare budgets for events.
- Recruit volunteers to help with events.
- Work with our external partners to ensure the success of events.
General duties
- Help other members of the committee with tasks as and when support is required
- Contribute to committee meetings – two via Skype and two in person per year
- Adhere to AFON policies and help ensure that members do the same
- Be willing to promote AFON if and when opportunities arise
It is anticipated the role will require an average of 4-6 hours per week, although this will increase nearer the time that events take place. The role may require evening, weekend and very occasional weekday duties. However, our committee roles are designed to be manageable alongside other commitments.
What are we looking for?
Experience
- Experience in organising events
- Experience of working with external organisations
- Experience of working in a team (desirable)
Skills and Competencies
- Project management skills
- Knowledge of marketing techniques
- High standard of computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook).
- Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Problem solving ability
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and work well under pressure.
- Ability to understand and generate budgets (desirable)
- Ability to plan ahead and work within agreed timeframes
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as required
- An interest in wildlife, the environment and conservation.

Fundraising Officer and Treasurer

Role Description:
AFON is now recruiting for the role of Fundraising Officer and Treasurer. You will be a core member of the leadership team, play a pivotal role in the committee and help enable the future growth of the organisation. This is a very exciting opportunity to build your personal network and gain valuable experience that you could take forward to future paid roles, either in the environmental sector or in administration, fundraising or management elsewhere. It also provides the chance to develop your CV with a nationally recognised organisation, enhance your skills and influence the future direction of A Focus on Nature.

Duties & responsibilities:
Fundraising
- To lead on fundraising for the organisation, working closely with the Associate Director.
- To research and identify potential new partners and sources of funding
- To manage and lead approaches to trusts, foundations and/or businesses that have not previously supported the work of A Focus on Nature.
- To build partnerships with these external organisations, ultimately working on joint funding bids with them.
- To develop proposals for each programme that requires funding.
- To support the Associate Director in the development of AFON’s fundraising and communications strategy and action plans.
Financial Management
- To manage the AFON bank account and paypal account.
- To maintain good accounts for the organisation, regularly reporting to the committee and delivering an annual report of accounts to members.
- To work with the Creative Director and Associate Director on an annual budget.
- To be responsible, with the Associate Director, for the financial sustainability of the organisation.
- To work with committee members and events organisers on budgeting and financial planning for events and activities.
- To make decisions that ultimately benefits the organisation in the short and long term.

What are we looking for?
Experience
- Experience in budgeting and account management
- Fundraising experience (desirable)
- Demonstrable ability to develop relationships with businesses/charities (desirable)
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent written skills with the ability to produce concise and creative fundraising bids
- High standard of computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook).
- Attention to detail.
- Effective time management in order to balance and prioritise own workload alongside the commitments of AFON
- Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrable knowledge of UK Trusts and Foundations. (desirable)
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and work well under pressure.
- Ability to understand and generate budgets.
- Ability to plan ahead and work within agreed timeframes
- Ability to work with others as part of a team.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as required
- An interest in wildlife, the environment and conservation (desirable)
